Astronaut Touches Down at Industry Leader AAR for Take Your Daughters/Sons to Work Day
Company hosts Dan Tani to inspire youth to pursue education and career paths in aerospace
WOOD DALE, Illinois – NASA astronaut Dan Tani made a special guest appearance at AAR (NYSE: AIR) World Headquarters to share his experiences in space with about 80 elementary and middle school students on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Tani, a native of Lombard, Illinois, also talked about his education and career path as a mechanical and structural engineer before joining NASA, emphasizing the role that math and science education have played in his career success.
AAR is recognized as the top supplier of aircraft parts in the world, ranks among the top five aircraft maintenance providers in the world and is the largest independent provider or aircraft maintenance in North America. The Company has also been applauded by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for its leadership, advocacy and outreach with public-private partners to align aviation curriculum with industry standards.
Tani’s visit landed on the 20th anniversary of Take Your Daughters and Sons To Work Day. Each year the Company builds a program designed to educate and inspire children to continue learning and dream big.
“We believe that it is important to help children connect the dots between education and jobs and each year our team puts together a great program that reinforces that connection,” said Timothy O. Skelly, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for AAR. “The children were enthralled by Mr. Tani’s presentation. He is an outstanding role model with a shared vision for inspiring youth about aviation and aerospace. It was a memorable day for the children and our employees.”
The children were treated to a full day of activities, including a visit by the Discovery Museum of Rockford, Illinois, which takes a hands-on approach to science curriculum. The program aligns with the goals of AAR’s nationwide Taking Flight program that builds public/private partnerships in the communities where AAR operates and features interactive field trips to inspire and educate students about careers in aviation.
